Toujane is one of the Matmata mountain villages of the state of Gabes, south of Tunisia, located not far from the city of Medenine. The novel says that the indigenous Berber population has been deported to areas of the Tunisian coast, where they founded Moknine and kalaa Alkobra cities. Five centuries ago Awled Thabet tribe from "Sakia El Hamra" arrived to Toujane and settled here. Many groups descended from Awled Thabet : Awled Mhelhel, Awled Hssen, Galaiin, Jemaiin, Awled Bouras, and Awled Youssef. They were called Fessil. The second row of Awled Thabet composed of: Awled Ben Dada, Elhmaza, Eljewabit, Elbrawka, Elayayda, Ladbech, and Awled Helel. In the nineteenth century Toujane imposed taxes to Medenine Lord, but in 1880 it changed to Matmata area and next to Mareth. Now it belongs to Dkhilet Toujane area and it was divided into four deanships: Dkhilet Toujane, Tounine, Zemertin, and Toujane.
According to Amazigh Toujane means a spring of water at the beginning of the mountain in the Berberian region. It's age of more than 1500 years of the first inhabited by tribes of Awled Ben Dada, Galaiin. Awled Ben Dada thought they belonged to the Berber in physiological factor confirms this hypothesis.
Toujane was divided into two large groups Fessil/Taicha.
Fessil is composed of: Awled Mhelhel, Awled Hssen, Galaiin, Jemaiin, Awled Bouras, and Awled Youssef.
Taicha is composed of: Awled Ben Dada, Elhmaza, Eljewabit, Elbrawka, Elayayda, Ladbech, and Awled Helel.
